Reverting to the mean

February 23, 2008 2:25 pm by donald

Dan’l B noted that West Virginia is actually quite a good team who suffers from a low ranking because of losing a bunch of close games. UConn, up until today, had been winning a bunch of clos games. So it didn’t surprise me today that they lost in a close game against Villanova — one of these coin flips had to end up being tails. Here are the highlights, courtesy of ESPN:

Here are some quick thoughts I had. I’ll let Coach O affirm/negate my observations — perhaps he saw something different in person (if he ever made it to the game):

  • Scottie Reynolds is so absolutely dangerous when he gets his shoulders square. He has one of the best-looking shots in the Big East.
  • UConn typically plays a high post-low post game with Adrien in the high post and Thabeet in the low post. That makes sense superficially — Adrien is the power forward, is shorter, and has more basketball skills to make better decisions; Thabeet is 7’3” and is the center. But I think having Thabeet up top and Adrien down low is at least something to continue to try out. Thabeet surprised me with two great passes to Adrien down low, so perhaps his basketball skills aren’t that bad. Adrien is a better finisher than Thabeet and also can catch the ball in traffic. Here are two examples from the game:

Both nontrivial passes — in the first one, he leads Adrien a bit, and in the second, he throws a left-handed, wraparound bounce pass.

  • Villanova has the best jerseys in the Big East (although Marquette’s powder blue uniforms are pretty close). Syracuse and UConn have the worst jerseys.

Actually Villanova has been wearing their “Throwback” jerseys for the past two games.

I like the vintage unis with the exception of the “VU” on the side of the shorts.

VUhoops — the throwback jerseys are sweet, but so are there regular jerseys. By the way, have you seen the Oregon jerseys?

A black Oregon on black uniforms? Awful.

I made the game through an intense snowstorm in the northeast. My observations from up high at Wachovia Center….
UConn can’t keep digging holes and crawling out of them….. Thabeet has very little heart, he lets smaller and more physical players take advantage of him and push him around…. UConn had a huge advantage down low and failed to cash in…… Adrien is a warrior, a load, and plays his heart out. He is a great rebounder and why Calhoun sat him down on the last Nova freethrow miss is a mystery to me. I said to my daughter sitting next to me, “he’s putting his top rebounder on the bench, hope they don’t expect Thabeet to get this rebound.” He didn’t, Cunningham rebounded his own shot and sealed the affair. BAD COACHING MISTAKE! ….. Adrien kills UConn on the foul line. Thabeet never comes to the ball on offense. Doesn’t present himself at all…… Scotty Reynolds is the key to Nova’s success…. He can win games like yesterday as long as he doesn’t get out of control. Beautiful jump shot and an uncanny twisting penetrator….. Wachovia Center is 10 times louder than the XL Center…. UConn students should try attending home games…. Many of them show up dressed as empty seats.

Totally agree about Thabeet on offense — doesn’t know how to “go after” the ball, doesn’t go up strong, and isn’t using his physical abilities as much as he should. By the way, check out the videos on Thabeet as a passer — those really surprised me.
