Big East Tourney: First Round
March 8, 2007 12:30 am by donaldLet’s do this list style, baby.
- You can watch the Big East Tournament at work. If you’re at a computer — check out ESPN360. I did this today and it worked pretty well — the window itself is pretty small, but you can make it full screen. Of course, if you do that, you won’t get any work done…
- But if you can’t watch… Head on over to the new NYTimes blog “The Bracket”. It’s supposed to be a blog about March madness in general, but their last six or so posts have all been about the Big East tournament. Yes, it’s called East Coast media bias, and I love it.
- Ho-hum: First day was pretty ho-hum. Although the Nova-DePaul and Marquette-St. Johns were close, I never thought Nova or Marquette would lose. The main highlight of today’s games was West Virginia setting the 3-pt field goals made record (17) for the Big East Tourney. Those crazy ‘Neers.
- Syracuse’s new jerseys are ugly.

First, they’re a bit too metrosexual for me. What’s with the tight fit? Secondly, what’s up with embracing the Orange as a mascot/nickname? Orangemen was lame in and of itself, but now they’re taking pride in the fact that they’re a color? Please. The only schools allowed to have colors as their mascots are good schools (yes, you heard me) like Harvard, Dartmouth, and Stanford. Actually, as a challenge to Big East Hoops readers: Can you name one more school with a nickname that’s (only) a color? - Eric Devendorf is a poor man’s Manu Ginobli. Yes, I love analogies (previous ones I’ve brought up here include Jeff Green being a poor man’s Chris Webber, Marquette’s triumvirate as a poor man’s 2005-2006 Villanova three-guard lineup, and Dominic James as a poor man’s Allen Iverson). Or I just love poor men. Regardless, Devendorf and Ginobli are both crafty with their head and shoulder jerks and are unafraid to venture down the lane.
- Big East Pick ‘em update: Kenny, Dennis, and Boss are tied in first place with 4 points, everybody else except for me has 3 points, and I have 2 points. I’m a poor man’s dumbass.
- Can’t wait for tomorrow’s games . They all look amazing. I think Louisville-WVU will turn out to be the best game of the day.

The NYTimes blog devotion to the BET is a little bit of bias and a little bit of proximity. It’s NY after all.
This from a fellow Husky fan…bitter much?
Just off the top of my head (and not including names like Red Storm or Crimson Tide) . . . .
Cornell Big Red.
Chicago Maroons.
Marquette was set to become the Gold late last year, but moved back to the Golden Eagles.
NYU is the Violets, presumably nicknamed after the school color.
North Texas is the Mean Green, although the university also goes by the Mean Green Eagles.
And I don’t know why I know this, but Bluefield State goes as the Big Blues.
Nicely done, Matt.
I’m not sure Cornell, North Texas, and Bluefield State fit. They’ve got those adjectives Big and Mean going for them. Of course, that only makes their nicknames that much worse.
Chicago and NYU definitely both count. I checked both their wikipedias and they are indeed just the Maroons and Violets. Wikipedia, of course, is truth.
I’m sure glad I didn’t go to NYU…the Violets? I can’t imagine anything worse, other than the Lavenders. They sound more like an 80s band than a sports team.
Actually, the Dartmouth moniker, I believe, is Big Green. Dartmouth used to be like the Warriors or something, but changed the name early on in the 20th century to Big Green.
The weird connection here is between Harvard and Syracuse’s respective monikers and the name of their daily student newspapers (Harvard Crimson and Daily Orange.)
Also, I’m sure there are a slew of Reds out there (whether indicating the color or the derogatory denomination of Native Americans), but none come to mind off the top of my head.
