Actually, the Dartmouth moniker, I believe, is Big Green. Dartmouth used to be like the Warriors or something, but changed the name early on in the 20th century to Big Green.

The weird connection here is between Harvard and Syracuse's respective monikers and the name of their daily student newspapers (Harvard Crimson and Daily Orange.)

Also, I'm sure there are a slew of Reds out there (whether indicating the color or the derogatory denomination of Native Americans), but none come to mind off the top of my head.

Nicely done, Matt.

I'm not sure Cornell, North Texas, and Bluefield State fit. They've got those adjectives Big and Mean going for them. Of course, that only makes their nicknames that much worse.

Chicago and NYU definitely both count. I checked both their wikipedias and they are indeed just the Maroons and Violets. Wikipedia, of course, is truth.

I'm sure glad I didn't go to NYU...the Violets? I can't imagine anything worse, other than the Lavenders. They sound more like an 80s band than a sports team.

Just off the top of my head (and not including names like Red Storm or Crimson Tide) . . . .

Cornell Big Red.

Chicago Maroons.

Marquette was set to become the Gold late last year, but moved back to the Golden Eagles.

NYU is the Violets, presumably nicknamed after the school color.

North Texas is the Mean Green, although the university also goes by the Mean Green Eagles.

And I don't know why I know this, but Bluefield State goes as the Big Blues.

The NYTimes blog devotion to the BET is a little bit of bias and a little bit of proximity. It's NY after all.

This from a fellow Husky fan...bitter much?

The only schools allowed to have colors as their mascots are good schools (yes, you heard me) like Harvard, Dartmouth, and Stanford.
